An Afternoon with Kerry Hughes

We first discovered Kerry Hughes after Harriet went on a hunt to find the perfect set designer for our AW15 shoot. After hours of searching, she stumbled across Kerry's colourful and playful work, often made from paper and wood and knew she was the right girl for the job.

Ahead of our new AW15 Seasonal collection launch, we popped to Kerry's studio in Dalston to chat all about her inspiration and an exciting exhibition she'll have on display at our Brick Lane store from next Thursday.

Hey Kerry! So, how did you get to where you are today? Hard work, late nights and lots of tea!

It's not long until we reveal our AW15 collection! What inspired your set for our shoot? The process was very collaborative with both Harriet and photographer Holly Falconer. It was quite an eclectic mix of ideas including Pee Wee's Playhouse, false perspectives and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.

What are the most interesting props you've ever made? It would have to be a series of cardboard animals I created for a group of children - it was very rewarding to see them interacting with the things I'd made.

Weirdest brief you've been given? Making suits out of inflated and twisted balloons that looked like marshmallows!

Tell us what your upcoming exhibition at our Brick Lane store is about? Glad To Know You is about finding beauty in everyday objects and situations that we often bypass.

Which blogs and magazines do you read to find inspiration? I like to look at a lot of science, interior and architecture blogs, such as Science Is Strange, Appetite For Decoration and Dezeen. I also love The Gourmand and French magazine étapes.

Females you admire in the industry? Tauba Auerbach, Annie Larson and Louisa Gagliardi to name a few. It's very inspiring when a person can take an unexpected or everyday material and completely rethink it.

 Glad to Know You opens on 30th July at our Brick Lane store and runs until 13th September.
