Birthday Bunting at the Lethaby Gallery

Birthday Bunting at the Lethaby Gallery

Blue skies and confetti ahead...

This month, we’re bringing our bestselling Bunting Necklace #TattyWorkshop to the sunny Lethaby Gallery, home to our Crafts Council exhibition: Misshapes: The Making Of Tatty Devine for one day only! Fancy getting your make on surrounded by rainbow giant jewellery casting twinkling reflections in the sunlight and over 100 pieces from our 20 year archive? You better read on as we chat to Stores and Workshop Supervisor Katie about our favourite ‘b’ word…

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT TATTY DEVINE IN 5 WORDS?

Ooooh, this is hard! Exciting. Inspiring. Fun. Busy. Colourful. Does that sound about right?

WHY DO YOU THINK OUR BUNTING NECKLACE WORKSHOPS ARE JUST SO POPULAR?

Well, It’s a perfect workshop: perfect for beginners to intermediate attendees and pro-makers who love a little making action. I even love just thinking of all of the colour combos, it’s endless! Frosted, rainbow, glitter, mirror, oh, and tonnes of special prints: I think our double-sided Memphis print has to be my personal fave. Pair it with cool pastel tones and a shiny silver-tone chain for a Miami Vice kind of look.

B TO THE U TO THE N TO THE T… WHAT DOES THAT SPELL? BUNTING! WHERE HAS THIS COLOURFUL #TATTYWORKSHOP TAKEN YOU?

Phew! We have literally been all over the UK with this workshop: from a super fun session in the Gherkin to dragonfly spotting over at Walthamstow Wetlands and a very special sunny hen party overseen by the pigs at Hackney City Farm… oink! We have also been lucky to make some lovely new pals at Museum of London in the last couple of years, plus a few jaunts up to Liverpool with Tate and Utility, BALTIC in Gateshead and MONO in Glasgow. Those are some well-travelled pliers, I’ll have you know!

OK, WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BUNTING COLOURWAY?

I knew you’d ask me that! It’s toooo tricky to say: I am a huge fan of the supposedly ‘gross’ colour combinations like lime green, pink and orange because they’re just so happy and I like to spread a little sunshine with my jewellery. Oh, and as mentioned, I am a HUGE Memphis print pusher... be warned, future attendees!

WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT HOSTING OUR JEWELLERY MAKING WORKSHOPS?

The best bit about my job is meeting old and new fans, hosting parties in weird and wonderful places and looking after excited Hen’s and their crew! Birthday parties, divorce parties, baby showers and general catch up’s… we have done it all! We’ve encountered *whisper it* penis-shaped cakes (hens, I’m looking at you!), made the best brews in all of London (fact), but more importantly, ensured all of our fans have a super time and make a piece that they can treasure forever and be sure to show off that they made it! Oh, and heads up, should your necklace look a little tired over time, do come to see us in our Brick Lane or Covent Garden stores and we will happily restore it back to its former glory. No guarantee I can make you a brew then though, soz!

WHAT ARE THE BEST SONGS TO MAKE TO?

Oooh I love, love, love making playlists: Beastie Boys - She’s Crafty is a goodie. I love a bit of Soul, Northern Soul and a spot of Jazz. You can’t beat a bit of Talking Heads, The Beatles or Lizzo, to assist you in your making, no?

LET'S GET SERIOUS: HOW WILL YOU BE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF TATTY DEVINE?

I cannot wait to see Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine exhibition, it’s so exciting and inspiring to see the women we are lucky enough to hang out with at work creating such special things... I can’t wait to see the in-store displays and smashing window art that our Hollie and Meg have been drawing up too, they’re going to be Instagram gold, I’m telling you! PS - It just so happen it’s my birthday around the exhibition launch, unfortunately, I shall not be turning 20 but it’s not far off though, honest!

WHICH PIECE DO YOU HOPE IS IN THE EXHIBITION?

Oh goodness, where do I start? Over the past 7 years, there have been so many ‘ones that got away’ I wanna be reunited with the peas! I love green and mushy peas too. ! I would also to see the Hot House pieces again, they're so good! I love the cult classics, Some sort of Price Tag would be ace... Fingers crossed, hey?

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU UP TO THIS YEAR?

It’s also a big birthday for our Seven Dials store, it’s where my Tatty journey began and holds a very special place in my heart. We turn 10 in November so watch this space for even more celebrations, it’s relentless! PARTAAY!
