Curious shoes
This is The Old Curiosity Shop on Portsmouth Street, London. It's one of London's most famous secret shops. It sells the most unusual shoes, and has a magical antique feeling with winding staircases and ancient wooden fittings. Rosie has a pair of shoes from here with two lace holes on one side and one on the other. They're lopsided and charming. And they made us curious about working together...
We got talking at a trade show with the shop's owner, shoemaker and designer Daita Kimura, and this led us to create a special collection of shoes. We added a Tatty Devine twist to Daita's existing designs with moustaches and perspex tassels...
The grey shoes with the wooden moustaches are designed to look like mice from the side! Daita says he's always liked our moustache shape. "I think they work very well together with the shoes. Hopefully it gives some kind of English humor."
Daita is from Japan, and went to shoe college in London. The Old Curiosity Shop used to be an antiques shop, but it was empty when Daita took it over in 1992. The shop has a long and winding history. It was built in 1567, and Charles Dickens named a book after it. Daita says the magical thing about the shop is that "time goes slower".
Let us show you one of our favourite details from the shoes: the peeptoe heel on the red patent Paris shoe. Daita says he added it "because not many people put details on the back of the shoes".
At Tatty Devine it's a strong point of principle to make most of our jewellery in our own workshops in England, so it's been brilliant working with someone like Daita who also likes to keep things as handcrafted as possible. "We make some handmade shoes in the premises," he says. "These collaboration shoes are made in a Spanish factory."
We have a very limited number of styles and sizes from this collaboration available to buy. Curious? Take a closer look here.
