Goodbye to the Great British Bake Off

It's finally here! What better way to celebrate the finale of the Great British Bake Off than sharing our very own showstopper from the Tatty Devine archives? Back in 2009, we were asked to design and create a very special 100th Birthday Cake for the best department store in the world, Selfridges. There's nothing we like more than a cake break at Tatty Devine HQ so we were very excited to take get our piping bags out! First of all, we laser cut heart detailed cake boards in Selfridges iconic yellow and black colour way and hunted down colourful ribbons and the perfect Perspex trinkets, shapes and charms to adorn each dummy cake layer. Well, it wouldn't be a Tatty Devine cake without Perspex, would it? We couldn't resist sneaking in a tribute to the cover of the Rolling Stones' album Let It Bleed by adding a vinyl record to one of the three layers. Did you know baking queen Delia Smith actually constructed that cake for the Stones before she was famous? Music is a big inspiration for Tatty Devine so it seemed fitting to adorn one layer with cute plastic musical instruments and silver shoes. Check out those cheeky Can-Can Legs, too! The next tier was held up by four dancing cupids carrying yellow versions of the Lolly Necklace. Spot the glossy red lips, glitter stars, flowers and silver mirror horses, too! It was a labour of love, but finally Harriet adorned each layer with piped finishing touches in a riot of colour. When Tatty Devine first began, Rosie and Harriet scoured cake supply shops for fun plastic decorations to turn into charm bracelets and necklaces. It seemed only fitting to adorn our Selfridges cake with kitsch Happy Birthday pieces, too! The top tier was reserved, as all birthday cakes should be, for candles. Lots of candles! We even found some amazing candles that were designed to look like crayons. We kept our fingers crossed and hoped that Selfridges would love it... ... and they did! A very special edible replica of our cake was made for Selfridges birthday party, where we celebrated alongside fabulous ladies wearing specially designed dresses with giant cartoon eyes by designer Giles. Boris Johnson teamed up with drag queen Johnny Woo to cut the cake and the stylish Lonely Hearts DJs played all the best tunes. What do you think of our showstopper?
