MBE: What We Wore to the Palace

Last Friday, Rosie and Harriet headed to Buckingham Palace to receive MBEs for Services to the Fashion Industry. Join us as we take a peek inside Rosie and Harriet's wardrobes, discover which designers created their MBE outfits and most importantly of all, which jewellery they wore to meet royalty! Harriet says, "I wore a dress and jacket by British design duo, Modern Love. As soon as we received the letter from Buckingham Palace, I had an inkling that I'd wear something yellow to the ceremony. It's one of my favourite colours and ticks all the boxes for me. Modern Love are my new discovery. We met Sarah, one of the designers, at the UKFT Awards and when I was dress shopping, I stumbled on their collection in Liberty.  I love that it's a classic shift dress but in a really special digital print. The lining of the jacket is patterned with multicoloured tropical birds, too. Manufacturing in Britain is central to Tatty Devine's principles and I love that my dress was made in London. I wore the Dinosaur GIANT Necklace as I wanted the Prince of Wales to see it with his own eyes. It's a classic Tatty Devine piece and I love the thought of a tyrannosaurous rex  on the loose in Buckingham Palace! Our studio team made a one-off version for me in yellow perspex to match my dress. "My shoes and bag are by Chanel. I have trouble finding beautiful shoes as I have size 42 feet. I really needed to have them stretched out by a cobbler, but there just wasn't time. I ended up having to wear them in around the Tatty Devine studio with two pairs of socks! I'm not really a handbag-and-shoes kind of girl. I haven't bought a proper bag in about fifteen years so I thought, "Well, you only go to Buckingham Palace once in your life!" "I invented my own headpiece using some kirby grips and amazing yellow tulle from our favourite milliner (and Brick Lane neighbour) Bernstock Speirs. My nail varnish is Need Sunglasses? by OPI and is such an fun, bright, punchy yellow hue. I think the Prince of Wales really loved my rainbow hair, too. The British are naturally quite eccentric and I think if they were allowed to, the Royal Family would express themselves a little more." Rosie says, "I'm wearing a dress by one of my favourite designers, Peter Jensen. I had it made to order especially for the ceremony as I needed something that wouldn't distract from the MBE medal. We worked with Peter back in 2009 to create a statement collection of Bunny Sunglasses. I love the fact that his studio is in East London, too. I wanted to represent a London based designer at the Palace. I really admire the simplicity to Peter's designs. In fact, I think there's something quite Queen-like about them! The points of difference, like the seamed hips and short sleeves on the accompanying nude raffia coat make it feel really special. Those little details are quite unusual but still traditional. My Gem Cut Statement Necklace is from our upcoming Autumn Winter 2013 collection. The emerald mirror perspex works really well with my dress. I can't wait for this collection to launch!" "My shoes are by Miu Miu. They're patent leather Mary Janes with Swarovski crystal detailing on the heel. I first saw them back when the Spring Summer 2013 collection launched, but at the time I didn't know I'd be headed to the Palace. They're just incredible! I love the sparkling Swarovski crystals and that they're not too high to walk in. They're a really traditional shape, too. I wore Glints of Glinda nail polish by OPI to match the glossy nude colour." "My handbag is by Smythson. I like the little touch of gold against the emerald green leather and how the colour matches my dress. My headband is by my favourite milliners and good friends Bernstock Speirs. I popped round to their Brick Lane shop this week and they made it for me. When we walked into Buckingham Palace, I really did feel like a princess!" Inspired by Rosie and Harriet's top fashion tips?
