Tatty Devine laser-cutting workshops at the British Museum
Hidden away underground in the British Museum is the new Samsung Digital Discovery Centre which, a couple of Saturdays ago, became Tatty Devine’s latest studio. Our designer Harriet was invited by the lovely team at the Museum to do two lasercutting workshops for 13-18 year olds. The theme of the day was Egyptian, which is also the inspiration for our current collection. I've just joined the Tatty Devine team (my name's Lucy) so I came along to report for you. To get the day started, Harriet gave a talk about how she and Rosie began Tatty Devine and what it was like to be a designer. She even gave her lucky listeners a sneaky peek at her sketchbook – including a glimpse of next season’s collection! There were loads of inspiring images, and Harriet walked like an Egyptian... The creative juices were soon flowing and everyone got to grips with getting their designs on screen: Once the designs had been cut by the lasercutter we got down to the serious task of making jewellery. With Harriet to provide an extra pair of hands (or pliers), magic happened and this: Soon became this: During the first session, the fabulous Giulia made this necklace inspired by the architecture at the British Museum. I think that gold perspex is an even better look than the original stone! We were so impressed by the imagination and creativity that went into the designs and I was quite tempted to take some of the jewellery home! These are a few of my favourites: At the end of the day we decided to experiment with the fabulous equipment in the centre and Harriet made some “improvements” to the Tatty Devine website: We had a really wonderful day and enjoyed seeing the amazing jewellery everyone made so much that we’re going to do it all over again in October. We’ll have a different theme and be running a day long workshop so you can really let your imagination run wild! Sign up to our newsletter to find out more nearer the time.
