Tatty Devine celebrates Buy British Day
Hooray for Buy British Day! Launched by Best of Britannia at the House of Commons, today is the day to celebrate amazing independent businesses and encourage your friends and family to discover and buy more British-made products.
When Tatty Devine first began, each piece of jewellery was made by Rosie and Harriet in their bedrooms - at that point, we didn't have a real studio! As the word spread and buyers from amazing stores including Harvey Nichols began to call, we made the move to our Brick Lane studio which later became our very first shop. As Tatty Devine went from strength to strength and more jewellery makers joined the production team, Rosie and Harriet knew that they wanted to keep manufacturing in Britain.
Rosie: "We started making in Britain because we didn't have the money or sales volume to get items made abroad in factories, so we developed our own manufacturing system and techniques, which in turn has informed our aesthetic. We don't outsource abroad as one of our main values is manufacturing in Britain. We're passionate about supporting the British economy and also representing good quality original design."
Harriet: "We want to keep manufacturing in our own studios because it gives us ultimate control and our turn around times can be very swift, which is not the case when manufacturing abroad. It's far more cost and time effective as we don't have to travel abroad to manage the process and it ensures the high quality that Tatty Devine has become known for. We have a very skilled local work force that we train ourselves, which means we know exactly who is making each piece of Tatty Devine jewellery."
From a walnut wood Horse Brooch to a silhouette Trapeze Necklace, every piece of Tatty Devine jewellery is designed, laser cut and hand finished by the talented teams in our London and Kent workshops.
Since the very beginning, our bespoke Name Necklace has been one of our most popular pieces. Choose your name, font, Perspex colour, charm and chain and the expert jewellery makers at our East London studio will design and create it especially for you. Watch them in action here!
Our second jewellery making studio in based in Kent, where Harriet grew up. From carefully hand painting Swallow Brooches to laser cutting beautiful Peacock Butterflies, keep up with the team's behind the scenes snaps over on Instagram.
Over the years, we've worked with many artists, creatives and designers who share our passion for manufacturing in Britain. We loved teaming up with long time collaborator and paper cut artist Rob Ryan on a precious collection in 18ct gold, 18ct rose gold and sterling silver last year. Staying true to our principles, the collection was designed in Rob's workshop and our East London studio, laser cut by our team to create intricate miniature casts and made in London's Hatton Garden by expert jewellers. Harriet explains,
"The finish of the jewellery was really important to us. We wanted the best quality and it would have been impossible to achieve that anywhere but Hatton Garden!”
