TATTY DEVINE DESIGNS FOR THE WILLIAM MORRIS GALLERY
One of our favourite hidden treasures in London is the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. The family home of William Morris, it showcases the works of the prolific artist and designer and his collaborators in a beautiful historic setting.
To celebrate the gallery's recent refurbishment, East London Craft Guerilla were invited to curate their gift shop for a selected period. In the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement Morris championed, the gift shop showcases the work of designers and crafters who design and hand make their products in London.
Inspired by 'Strawberry Thief', one of Morris' most popular textile designs, we have recreated his iconic strawberry motif in walnut wood. In Victorian times, the strawberry was a symbol of love. It is said that ‘Strawberry Thief’ is an allegory of Morris’ love, Jane Burden, being stolen from him by his friend, Dante Rosetti. The organic shape and poignant symbolism make the strawberry the perfect subject for our piece.
Delicate dots of glistening red resin make this piece look almost good enough to eat. Finished off with a soft green leather leaf and delicate golden stem, this is one fruit we wish grew in hedgerows! Designed and handmade in our London workshop, it represents our love for art and craftsmanship and reflects Morris' own admiration for the 'beauty of the craft'.
Our Strawberry Necklace is now available exclusively in-store at the William Morris Gallery gift shop.
